Basset Hound Breed Information

Breed Group: Hound

Weight: 40-60 lbs

Height: 14 inches

Color(s): any recognized hound color

Overview

This is a naturally well-behaved breed making him the perfect household pet. The Basset Hound is very gentle, sweet, and loving. This breed is prone to howling and barking so he makes a good alarm dog, but is much too gentle to be a guard dog.

Character

The long ears of this rather lazy breed are sensitive, which makes him best for a life with older and more respectable children. The Basset Hound has the tendency to be stubborn, but never timid. Should never display signs of aggression, as this is a naturally fun loving and gentle dog.

Temperament

Affectionate, lazy, devoted, quiet, and peaceful, the Basset Hound does exceptionally well with a family. This breed loves children, and generally does well with other animals. They can be taught tricks, but tend to be stubborn so patience is key.

Care

Combing and brushing with a firm bristle brush should keep shedding to a minimum as this breed sheds constantly. Toenails should be trimmed regularly as this breed is lazy which can neglect the nails. Cleaning under the folds of skin works best, and the ears should be cleaned regularly.

Coat

The coat of the Basset Hound should always be short, never long. The coat is dense, hard, and smooth making it weather resistant. Hair should also always be straight and firm in texture.

Training

This can be a very sensitive breed so gentle and patient training is a must. Consistency works best with this short and stubborn breed. The Basset Hound has the tendency to go off sniffing completely disregarding his master so fun techniques work best.

Activity

Basset Hounds have the tendency to overeat therefore should be given plenty of exercise to keep him healthy. Normally a lazy breed, this dog should be taken on regulated walks and should be allowed a free roam in a safe, fenced in area.

QUESTION: will a basset hound dog make a good servive animal for my autistic child?

Anonymous - 4/11/2012 4:52:52 PM

Respond to Question

I have 2 basset hounds and they are very gentle and sweet, but are extremely stubborn and training was slow and difficult. Bassets will do anything for treats but without a constant treat, they probably won't. If they catch scent of something, they will leave you and pursue the scent rather than listening to return. For a just a pet and companionship, absolutely. Work and service, not so much.

I have had two bassetts with this problem. The 3 yr old basset I have now takes glucosamine and fish oil (rec. by my vet) daily. He has bad joints but this combination daily has helped and you'd never know anything is wrong.

QUESTION: I have a 2 year old basset female who is a sweetheart and would be absolutely perfect if she just didn't 1) Eat poop and 2) Get the idea of doing her business outside. I've crated her and put her on a schedule and it just doesn't seem to work. The poop eating is disgusting. How can I break her of this habit? Do you have any tips for potty training that I can use? I don't want to have to keep her in the crate all day long.

Respond to Question

Try another kind of food . Your basset is lacking something in her diet! My bassets did the same thing, we changed their food and it made things better!!

Anonymous - 4/17/2012 6:43:49 PM

Mine both eat poop too. The only way to really stop it is to be there to pick it up right after they go, so they don't get a chance to eat it. I've tried the pills, pineapple, everything. Nothing works except the quick pick up!

QUESTION: My bassett hound is a 3 yr old male. He's generally a very good dog. But he tends to play aggressively with my 8 year old even when my son doesn't want to play. The dog will go up and bite at him. Is there a good way to break him of this habit? I'm worried he'll get carried away.

Anonymous - 1/11/2012 1:19:25 PM

Respond to Question

You have to firmly, directly, down to your Basset's level with a firm, stern NO and really act upset with your dog. Immediately, remove him from all people contact, leave him along in a cage and after he is in there for 30 minutes, take him out and play with him in your friend voice. It may take 2-3 times for your Basset because they are stubborn but you will get thru to him! You just need to establish yourself and the Alpha corrector of bad behavior

QUESTION: i have a 6 month old blue basset whose weight is 14 lbs. he gets fed 3 times a day about a 1 1/2 cup each time. vet said to up him slowly to 2cups 3 times a day. he has always been scrawny since a puppy. my question is this... is there ANYTHING we can add to help get weight on him like hamburger or chicken? he is healthy minus the weight..no worms, parasites, or anything. he CHEWS on everything and eats everything minus his toys (he wont touch them). he is on puppy food mixed with wet food. and i just cant see paying for science diet (i have compared ingredients n they are for the most part the same). he is very active with my other 2 dogs. but any suggestions for weight gain would be great.. atleast until he is outta the puppy stage!!! thanks in advance!

Respond to Question

Check your bassetts food for vitamin K if it has that look for something else. Vitamian k is put in the food to cover-up bad stuff that is put in the food.

Anonymous - 4/17/2012 6:52:42 PM

Our basset hound was the runt of the litter and we had trouble feeding her at first because she wasn't used to eating much. After we got her home, we started her on Science Diet and it was worth the money because now she is at a healthy weight and is steadily growing. I would discourage feeding wet food because is causes dental problems later and the dog might refuse to eat dry food. I know you don't want to pay for the Science Diet, but it my case it was well worth the money!

Anonymous - 2/27/2012 5:32:15 PM

Baby rice ceral and milk your young Basset needs a higher fat diet and less exercise. Adult dog foods have higher minerals and may have lower fats, feeding him people food could cause unpleasant side effects such and gas and messy clean ups, higher fats content is what will fatten him up.

Anonymous - 2/22/2012 9:57:35 PM

a good dry food like sciencs plan ,dont forget his health starts from what you put in him ,not the out side of him ,the cheap brands may not have the quality.untill he is a year old he should not go out for walks he has the other dogs to play with, he will grow while he is sleeping so try and keep him rested

QUESTION: My Bassett has come up with bumps all over her head and ears - we took her to the vets and they gave antibotics but doesnt appear to be working - does anyone have any ideas what this maybe is or any similar stories?

Anonymous - 7/28/2011 7:59:16 AM

Respond to Question

We have the best bassett and she is 11yrs old. She gets bumps different places on her body. I took her to the vet and he said she had clogged pores and he shaved alittle spot and poked it and puss came out like a pimple. We have to take her in reg. and have this done otherwise they will continue to grow and then we'll have to have surgery to remove them like one that she had on her leg. It got so large it would scrape the ground when she walked and then bleed. We thought it was cancer. Now I have them removed much sooner. We feel your pain!

Anonymous - 11/18/2011 11:43:31 AM

My basset has them all over her back end on her back. The vet told us its puss pockets, I think its more then that though. She had one removed and it was not cancer so I am not sure what to think. My dog is 11 years old.

Anonymous - 9/7/2011 3:15:42 PM

My dog is not a Bassett Hound but a Great Pyrenees, the vet told us that the bumps on her hears were fly bites

QUESTION: Is it easy for basset hounds to have puppies?

Anonymous - 6/24/2011 4:24:05 PM

Respond to Question

my basset hound just had her first litter of puppies a week and a half ago and thankfully every thing went very well... all puppies are healthy and growing like weeds :-) she did amazing but I was right there incase anything went wrong and had spoken to the vet for advice.

Anonymous - 4/11/2012 8:35:26 PM

Sometimes basset hounds do not have any issues however it is best to keep an eye on your female when she goes into labor. I almost lost 2 puppies because they were not breathing when they came out. The older the mother the easier it is on them and the better they are at doing their motherly duties!

QUESTION: i have a 6 year old bassett hound he was a rescue dog he was said to be great with kids and other dogs he was ok the first 3 days but now he growls when ever our dog or 6 year old gets near him this only happens when he is laying down other wise he is fine with them idont want to give him

Anonymous - 6/7/2011 11:48:21 AM

Respond to Question

just let your bassett hound know that its not ok to do that - make sure he knows what he did wrong and watch the kids. If they are poking at him when your not looking the growl could be a "im old and tired so leave me alone".

Anonymous - 1/9/2012 10:00:11 PM

Thank you all so much for the advice... I finally had to put the fence up like one person suggested.... Our basset hound is going next week to get Neutered.. and human contact was not enough for my little fellow.. So, I acquired a rescued Boxer and now aside from sheer chaos in my house.. :) but happiness... My basset is very happy... Now we are working on his stubborness... but like with babies it is one step at a time...

Anonymous - 11/29/2011 3:06:51 PM

Bradley (4 mths)was brought to my farm to be with other rescued beagles and bassets ....... and he came with continuous potty issues in the house and truck. After neutering he was a changed puppy! He has learned to use the dogs doors. The only thing he chews on is either my boxer/hound's hind leg or the ears of my daughters Cavalier King Charles! Having said that, today he peed in the vet tech's pocket when the the vet took his stitches out, then promptly peed on the floor. It's a personal issue obviously, as he has been fine after that. Can your puppy get outside to 'self exercise' in the yard? Human interaction rather than being left to their own devices with a toy. So NEUTURE/SPAY, DOG DOORS, HUMAN INTERACTION, A YARD TO EXPLORE (completely fenced in) seems to work well with all my hounds.

Anonymous - 11/1/2011 3:50:19 PM

I have a two year old male basset and when he was a baby I had to rock him three times a day for his naps. It is not just about being with you they have to have contact with your body. Treat him like you would a human baby. When he comes to you crying wrap him in a blanket and give him a rocking till he falls asleep. As for the potty training. Take him out every hour for the first week. I even got up twice a night to wake him and take him out for the first week. Put him on a training schedule as he gets older he will stick to that schedule himself. Use a signal word as he is doing his business outside. Repeat over and over again until he recognizes the word with what he is doing. I used POTTY POTTY over and over again. My basset now goes on command. He also never has an accident in the house.

QUESTION: We live in south texas....and it gets pretty stinking hott here. Could bassets get over heated easily...or are they a breed that can handle being outside most of the day and the heat?

Anonymous - 6/3/2011 6:32:46 PM

Respond to Question

I would suggest getting your basset a doghouse so it has a place to rest and cool down if it ever gets too hot. I'm not sure if they can handle lots of heat though so this is more of a precaution just in case.

QUESTION: I bought a basset hound not sure if full blooded owner said she was she looks just like a basset red/white the only thing is she has high knuckles and med length ears not really long like i've seen in pics just curious if anyone can help determine this?

Anonymous - 4/26/2011 2:58:37 PM

Respond to Question

how young is your basset hound? their ears get longer as they age.

Anonymous - 8/13/2011 12:20:30 AM

My basset and many others are also like this. They are shorter, trimmer, and lack some of the deep, sagging wrinkles and have slightly shorter ears. Sometimes even pure bread dogs don't manifest traits that their breed in known for.

Anonymous - 5/20/2011 12:12:39 AM

A true full blooded Basset has a unique "bump" at the crown of their head kind of between the ears on the back of their heads. Other than that you can get a genetics test done for cheap.

QUESTION: My 11 month old beagle, my 11 month street dog and my 11 month basset hound are always having a howling contest - why is that?

Anonymous - 4/19/2011 1:41:31 PM

Respond to Question

They're all very social and basset hounds are especially known for their vocal personalities. They love to hear their own howls and enjoy hearing them echoed by their pack members. There are all sorts of evolutionary reasons for this behavior, and from my own experience with the same and similar breeds, it's just plain fun to have howling contests.

QUESTION: My Basset Hound is 11months -1 year old female-she has been with our family for 10mo. She has behaviors that concern me. From the beginning she, like all dogs, loves to go out for a walk. To this day however, if we pass within 20 ft of a trash dumpster she locks her legs and wont budge. I know what this might indicate and avoid it. My current concern is her chewing, digging at, and pulling up carpet in the house. My daughter and I hope there is a tangible reason and answer to this problem. My wife is not so sympathetic. It crossed my mind that at her age, not having been spayed is this conceivable or is it purely a behavior problem? Any input is welcome. Oh yeah the vet said she 75% basset hound. please help!

Anonymous - 4/8/2011 1:49:36 AM

Respond to Question

My Basset's age 4 months and 12 years (both rescued recently) do not dig, my beagles DIG! The only time any digging action is performed is when they are 'fluffing' up their beds. All my rescued Beagles and Bassets, apart from the 12 yr old are spayed/neutured. I had issues with everyone of them before that. My 4 mth old Basset, Bradley, has no chewing issues at all, unless it's with my boxer/hounds hind leg or my daughter's King Charles Spaniel's ears. I strongly believe in dog doors, well fenced hound proofed yard, human interaction and loads of patience and TLC! Bradley's nickname is slug!!!!! They really aren't into the active lifestyle, but love to roam the fence perimeter of their 'property'.

Anonymous - 11/1/2011 3:58:33 PM

Basset Hounds normally are not chewers. I have had several and none of them chewed even toys. Does the vet think she may need to add something to her diet? I would try soup bones to start. Many grocery stores sell them.

Anonymous - 4/23/2011 9:11:32 AM

Hi, I have a little Chi/Welsh Corgi who had the same behavior. He grew out of it and now dosen't do it. If there was a seam in the carpet, he would find it! He was 1year old when I got him and spent most of his life in a crate. Just to let you know.

QUESTION: How much sould my 1 year old female Basset Hound weigh? She is 30 lb and she is almost 1 year. Is that a good weight?

Anonymous - 4/7/2011 5:06:18 PM

Respond to Question

My 4 month old Basset got weighed today and is 32.5lbs. His Dad is over 70lbs and mum is over 55lbs.... guess I'm going to have a big boy!

Anonymous - 11/1/2011 4:02:36 PM

I have a large basset, he is 70 lbs and a year and a half. But he is also taller than the typical basset. All lines have different builds as long as she isnt overweight 30 may be a good weight.

Anonymous - 10/16/2011 1:23:25 AM

My basset is 31 LBS and he is only 4 months old...his father is 65 LBS and his mother is 55, so I figure mine is going to be in the same weight range. If your dog looks healthy and you cant see his ribs then you're probably fine. Just watch him to make sure he is eating enough! Good luck!

Anonymous - 6/22/2011 3:25:57 PM

WELL MY BASSET IS 1YR AND 3 MONTHS OLD AND HER WT. IS 53 LBS. OUR VET SAID SHE IS A GOOD WT. BUT SHE DON'T WANT TO SEE HER MUCH HEAVIER. MY DOG EATS 2 TIMES A DAY APPROV. 1 CUP EACH TIME.

QUESTION: My Basset Hound nips and bites you and jumps on you. How do I train her?

Anonymous - 4/5/2011 7:56:53 PM

Respond to Question

I don't know if that will help the jumping or not. But I do know that when your basset hound bites, do say ow and stop but DON'T punish her by putting her in a crate. With basset hounds, punishment does not go over well. They love praise. So give her treats when she does get down or when she does something right.

Anonymous - 6/22/2011 11:08:47 AM

When your Basset Hound dog jumps up place your toes on his/her hind foot and press down. The dog will get down. Keep going this and say DOWN each time. The jumping will stop soon. Teach children to use one word, DOWN when the dog jumps up. Always use one word commands. With the biting yell in pain when the dog bites and say -STOP and put him/her in a crate for time-out, about 20 minutes.
