Overview

The American Staffordshire Terrier has triggered much debate about his origins. It is said that the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are one in the same breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier is indeed the name of the show strain, while the fighting dog strain is labeled the American Pit Bull Terrier. These two dogs are recognized by different registries as different breeds, although they are considered the same breed. They are bred to have the same qualities and the same build.

Character

The American Staffordshire Terrier has retained an undeserving reputation for many years being that they are commonly used in the so-called "sport" of dog fighting. This breed however is very devoted, gentle, and loving. The American Staffordshire Terrier makes a wonderful companion for a dominant and experienced owner, and they make excellent guard dogs being that they are protective of their territory, family, and home.

Temperament

The American Staffordshire Terrier has a very even and stable temperament, which makes him a very reliable companion. This breed does do well around small children, but should not be left unsupervised around them, as this is a very powerful and rambunctious breed. The American Staffordshire Terrier can get along exceptionally well with other dogs, however the fighting strain of dogs should never be placed in a home with another dog as they still retain that aggressiveness. Proper research is necessary to be sure of the temperament of the dog.

Care

The American Staffordshire Terrier does not require much grooming at all being very shorthaired. They shed very little, however depending on the climate they can become an average shedding breed. To remove dead or loose hairs, a rub down with a harsh and dry towel, or a specially made rubber glove would be sufficient. Dry shampooing is recommended as opposed to bathing, however an occasional bath is all right.

Coat

The Staffordshire Terrier has a very short coat that requires minimal, to sometimes no grooming. The coat should always be short and straight, being the same length all over the body of the dog. The coat of this breed should remain stiff to the touch and be very close lying to the body of the dog. The coat should be glossy and never be soft or silky.

Training

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a very high energy and vivacious breed making training a little difficult. Being intelligent yet very willful and stubborn, this breed requires consistent and firm training from a dominant handler to prevent dominance issues that could arise. Firm correction is a must as this is a very powerful and willful breed. Obedience classes at an early age are definitely recommended for someone experienced with the American Staffordshire Terrier breed.

Activity

The American Staffordshire Terrier requires quite a bit of exercise being so energetic and lively. This breed does best with at least a medium sized yard and does not do well in apartment life as they have the tendency to become bored and can become very destructive at the expense of the owner. At least two hours of exercise per day is required for this extremely lively breed. Long walks and/or runs are recommended as well as free roam in a fenced area.

QUESTION: We are considering getting a am staff but we have a 3 year old in our house would you still recommend them?

Anonymous - 12/14/2011 2:55:59 PM

Respond to Question

I would definitely recommend an Amstaff to raise with your 3 yr old. They generally love children, but are a large breed, so should be supervised with children when they are puppies. With the proper training, an AMstaff is an awesome family pet.

QUESTION: Just wondering if Am Staff dogs always look a bit stiff in their getting up and walking. We just acquired one and we really like him. He's only about 1 year old and can play like one but mostly he likes to nap so I'm surprised by all the 'long walk' talks. Maybe it's living out in a country setting with other dogs that he is getting enough run around time. The main thing I'm wondering about is the stiffness in his walk just when he just gets up from laying around a bit. It seems more than it should be.

QUESTION: HI! I AM CONSIDERING ADOPTING A 1.5 YEAR OLD MALE AMERICAN STAFFORDSHIRE TERRIER. DO THEY WALK WELL ON LEASHES? ARE THEY CUTE AND KISSABLE? DO THEY ENJOY HUMANS AND CAN THEY ENTERTAIN THEMSELVES? I AM LOOKING FOR A MEDIUM SIZED DOG, ARE THEY AROUND HIGH 40'S POUNDS? THANKS!

Respond to Question

I got my Am Staff when he was about 5 months old from the shelter, he is almost 2 and he is awesome. Very good with other dogs at the park and my niece and nephew 4 and 2. I try to have him off the leash as much as possible. He has so much energy, so if you're not up for long runs/walks, don't get one.

Anonymous - 11/16/2011 12:12:51 PM

American Staffordshire Terriers are DEFINITELY cute and kissable...if they are trained properly the walk well on leashes but they are strong so make sure he will walk with you rather than pull you. they love their humans and are very loyal but they are full of energy and require ALOT of excersise otherwise they get into trouble!! i would consider them to be a larger breed dog and mine is actually a big boy at about 75 to 80 pounds not sure about others. they are amazing dogs. not by any means low maintenance! hope that helps.

Hi, I did the same two years ago (adopted a 1.5 yo Amstaff) and never regretted it. It will of course depend on the individual dog. Our Pepe turned out to be the cuddliest, most compliant and willing to please, kissable, humans and other dog enjoying, medium size, little care, gorgeous companion. He is not desexed but does not show any domineering tendencies whatsoever. His companions are a German Shepherd of the similar age and an older Greyhound who is a master and commander and a 12 yo Chihuahua girl who is an absolute boss to them all. Pepe likes sleeping on the bed, between the sheets or under the duvet. Walks both on a leash or follows the heel without the leash. Not a huge eater. I adopted him by chance, but if I were in a postion to choose a breed, it would certainly be an American Staffy. Good luck, hopefully it goes well for you and the dog. Cheers

Respond to Question

My American Staffordshire Terrier loves children...he is very gentle and kind to them. He does like to lick their faces and hands, a lot.

Anonymous - 4/25/2011 12:37:46 PM

American Staffordshire Terrier's are a wonderful companion to children, they are loving and affectionate. They should be introduced slowly and proper rules set for the child in regard to appropriate interaction with the dog. The dog also needs obedience training and correction for any rough play. Usually the breed is very gentle and careful with children, they make wonderful playmates. NEVER leave any child unsupervised with ANY dog.

QUESTION: i have adopted a stray pup ,it really looks like a staffordshire terrier, what is the easiest way to identify this breed?

Anonymous - 11/18/2010 5:24:10 PM

Respond to Question

"PitBull" or "Pit Bull" is NOT a breed it is a genre' whereby most Bully breeds are described. The Bull Terrier is the only 'Pit Bull' genre banned in the UK, Norway and several other European countries - Staffy's, English Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs etc etc are NOT banned , Dogo Argentina, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Presa Carnaris are banned.

Anonymous - 3/29/2011 10:31:47 PM

An american pitbull terrier is an official breed recognized by the ukc. It is not akc recognized like the am staff. They are very similar in personality but the am staff does tend to be taller on average. Many of the "pitbulls" around are a mix of the two.

urichjr - 3/25/2011 11:25:02 AM

An american Staff-terrior is not usually taller than a American pitbull. American staff usually are short and stocky and american pitbulls are more taller even leaner at time like a grey hound.and by the way American pitbull Terrier, American staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier are a breeds its been decided by the United Kingdom. Yes they did mix different types of bull dogs and terriors to get the right breed but last time I check that's how most dog breeds became to be. by breeding different breeds together to become a new breed.

Anonymous - 3/24/2011 9:21:54 PM

The "pitbull" is a breed, somebody didn't do their research. To answer the question you'll be able to tell by looking at it, but if that doesn't work just do a picture comparison. In some cases though the Pitbull Breed may seem to look more like a hound to some people, these cases aren't usual and mostly just apply to game pitbulls which are other wise known as fighting pitbulls.

QUESTION: I have a 10yr old male American Staffordshire Terrier that has just lost his mate and am wondering if it would be a good idea to get another mate for him?

Anonymous - 10/29/2010 1:01:58 PM

Respond to Question

Yes, definitely...your American Staffordshire Terrier needs a companion, that is what he is used to. I would suggest a female pup or adult female dog of similiar size & activity level.

loguesamstaffs - 1/3/2011 7:57:25 PM

i wouldnt get a puppy, maybe adopt an older female from a shelter so that he doesnt have to put up with the chewing and antics of a rambunctious pup, i bet he would enjoy the company or even see how he does as an only guy and give him more affection/attention now that he is an only child....:)
