Overview

Developed during the 1970's in Alaska by Linda Spurlin, the Alaskan Klee Kai is a smaller version of the Alaskan Husky. Bred as companions, this breed is relatively new, having been recognized by the UKC in 1997. They come in 3 sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.

Character

The Alaskan Klee Kai's most distinctive characteristic is the full facial mask. This breed is extremely loyal, affectionate with family, and active.

Temperament

Alaskan Klee Kai's are highly intelligent, highly devoted, and agile. They thrive on attention and companionship. The Alaskan Klee Kai is reserved around strangers and will alert by barking. They are also "talkers", emitting vocal sounds when they want attention. They do well with children and other pets they have been raised with.

Care

The Alaskan Klee Kai requires frequent brushing. Dry shampoo or bathe when necessary. This breed has no known health issues.

Coat

A double coat breed, the Alaskan Klee Kai has a well-furred appearance. Heavier fur is at the ruff of the neck and on the tail. They are average shedders and shed heavily twice a year.

Training

Early intense socialization is a must. This breed also does well in obedience. They require firmness, fairness, and consistency.

Activity

The Alaskan Klee Kai does best with a securely fenced yard. They are excellent escape artists, so fencing must be set into the ground to prevent digging and tall enough to prevent jumping. They benefit from daily exercise and family interaction.

QUESTION: Having a hard time getting our Alaskan Klee Kai to eat dry food, wet food, mixed - he does milo beef jerky and of course people food - any one recommend a dog food that he will eat? Please dont suggest starving him, we've gone a day & a half, still would not eat .Thank You

Respond to Question

cont. first we gave her just rice and chicken (from the chicken the bones were from chopped small) with the bone gravy mixed all together then we gradually added dry food (and less rice and chicken) to get her used to eating it, and eventually we got to the point where it's entirely dry dog food with enough bone gravy to make it taste good. you'll have to decide what is best for your dog though. also once she wasn't eating the rice and chicken any more we just cooked the extra chicken for ourselves.

Anonymous - 2/29/2012 12:50:52 PM

my german shepherd had the same problem. What we did was to buy a whole chicken and cook it. then took the bones out. You may have heard that chicken bones splinter and should not be eaten, it is true to a point, but only if the chicken has only been cooked. Take the boned and boil them in vinegar until they crumble when you pinch them (we put it in our crock pot for 18-20 hours), then blend the bones in a blender. once that is done the bones will be safe to eat, and are very nutritious. we had to wean our dog onto the use of dry food though,

The Alaskan Husky was the foundation of the Alaskan Klee Kai, with a touch of Siberian Husky, Schipperke and American Eskimo dog. The breed is about 30 years old and is still extremely rare, due to a strict breeding program.

QUESTION: If they were primarily house pets, how well would Alaskan Klee Kai's tolerate hotter climates: moderate winters with hot summers around 70F-105F with ~65% humidity? Moreover, how are they around kids (10-12 years) compared to breeds that are considered really good with children? Thank you.

wusiki - 5/30/2011 8:55:36 PM

Respond to Question

I live in California and have an Alaskan Klee Kai. The weather is very hot, and he does fine. Periods of high humidity and heat cause him to "blow coat." Our AKK is pretty good around children, but we made sure to keep him around a LOT of kids when he was a puppy. If you don't socialize this breed early on with as many people and as many other dogs you can, they will become people, and dog aggressive. As soon as they get their 6mo shots you should start them with a puppy socialization and obedience classes. That is a MUST! Another must, if possible, try and find a breeder close enough to drive to. It's so important to get a feel for the adult dogs, and puppies for adoption, in action. A puppy that looks cute on a breeders website, could be psycho when you get him home. (hahaha...that is what happened to me the first time, but you live, and learn.) I found a breeder that was a 3.5 hour drive away, but it was SO worth the drive.

QUESTION: About how high of a fence would an alaskan klee kai be able to jump over??

Anonymous - 5/9/2011 6:19:19 PM

Alaskan Klee Kai dogs like to roam and can be escape artist, similar to other huskies. We have a six foot privacy fence with large rocks lining the bottom. Some AKK can climb and dig or use an object to get over a fence like a trash can.

QUESTION: I go to school 7 hours a day - will the Alaskan Klee Kai be ideal for me?

Anonymous - 4/18/2011 6:04:57 AM

Respond to Question

Hmmm, during the first 6 months your Alaskan Klee Kai puppy is home with you is VERY important. If you don't think you will be able to spend that time socializing him with as many people as you can, and then as many other dogs as you can, once he's had his rabies and parvo shots, then the AKK probably isn't the most ideal dog for you. Without the time for the early socialization, you'll find that it will be a difficult relationship between the two of you. :(

Anonymous - 6/11/2011 2:19:58 PM

try to get as many toys the Alaskan Klee Kai likes and train it when your on break from school

QUESTION: Are Alaskan Klee Kai's friendly, do they bite, and how big are the toy dogs?

Anonymous - 4/17/2011 10:59:54 PM

Respond to Question

Toy: Up to and including 13 inches about 10lbs Miniature: Over 13 inches up to and including 15 inches about 10 to 15lbs Standard: Over 15 inches up to and including 17 inches about 15 to 23lbs Different Alaskan Klee Kai's have different personalities, need good socialization early on.

settleakk - 8/15/2011 9:58:21 PM

If you take care to spend the necessary time with early socialization, then Alaskan Klee Kai's can be very friendly, otherwise they can become very shy and definitely prone to biting. That goes for socialization with other dogs as well, or risk your dog becoming extremely dog aggressive. Puppy socialization class for this breed is an absolute must!!

QUESTION: How much does a mini alaskan klee kai weigh? And how can you tell if they are toy or mini?

Anonymous - 2/10/2011 3:54:06 PM

Respond to Question

Alaskan Klee Kai UKC Breed Standard Toy: Up to and including 13 inches about 10lbs Miniature: Over 13 inches up to and including 15 inches about 10 to 15lbs Standard: Over 15 inches up to and including 17 inches about 15 to 23lbs

settleakk - 8/15/2011 10:02:17 PM

That is an incorrect answer. According to Alaskan Klee Kai Breed standards the following is accuraate. i am a breeder. Height: Standard 15-17.5 inches (38-42 cm.) Height: Miniature 13-15 inches (33-39 cm) Height: Toy under 13 inches (33 cm.) Weight: Standard 23 pounds (10 kg.) Weight: Miniature 15 pounds (7 kg.) Weight: Toy under 10 pounds (4.3 kg.)

Anonymous - 5/5/2011 11:36:41 AM

A STANDARD would weigh around 23 pounds. Minis should weigh less than 12 pounds

Anonymous - 5/5/2011 11:34:47 AM

A mini alaskan klee kai can weigh 23 lbs

QUESTION: Can an alaskan klee kai be good when other people arrive?

Anonymous - 12/9/2010 11:24:39 PM

Respond to Question

Absolutely, but you must socialize them immediately. Socialization with other dogs is a must as well, but just make sure that the dogs they socialize with before their 6 month shots are up to date on their rabies and parvo, after that take them to the dog parks often or risk severe dog aggression.

Anonymous - 6/11/2011 2:27:38 PM

Alaskan Klee Kai require A LOT of socialization in order to be comfortable around strangers. Even when properly socialized they tend to be wary of new people and dislike being approached quickly.

Anonymous - 5/5/2011 11:42:36 AM

If you train your alaskan klee kai right, yeah. Any dog will be good when people arrive if you train it right regardless of the breed.

QUESTION: Can Alaskan Klee Kai be an outside dog?

Anonymous - 12/9/2010 4:38:33 PM

Respond to Question

i own Alaskan Klee Kais, and have a six foot fence. My dogs have NEVER jumped the fence and since they stand appx a foot high arent likely to either. The biggest concern would be them digging UNDER the fence, which we prevent by burying a portion of the bottom of the fence on install. I have never seen an AKK climb a tree, or escape our yard which has multiple trees in it.

Anonymous - 5/5/2011 11:40:38 AM

Depends on what you mean by outside dog. Like any other dog, the alaskan klee kai likes going out and having exercise but this one should not be predominately outside because of its small stature. I would guess it does not tolerate cold as well as its larger counterpart.

Anonymous - 12/22/2010 2:30:57 AM

No, because Alaskan Klee Kai's are known to easily jump over six foot fences, I knew a AKK that climbed a tree. They should always be on a leash while on a walk and should be watched while out side in the yard

QUESTION: how much money is the alaskin klee klai?

Anonymous - 10/24/2010 8:55:49 PM

Respond to Question

I live in the U.K. and I look at the cost of alaskin klee klai's frequently and they are often £200.

Anonymous - 10/25/2011 9:48:12 AM

The cost is determined by the age, the quality and the breeder. For the most part expect to spend between 1500.00 to 3500.00 for PET QUALITY, 2400.00 to 4500.00 for breed/show potential. That price may or may not include health certificate to fly, micro chip, and crate. Some breeders itemize each item to the standard price. Every breeder does what they feel is best for them in their circumstance. You can sometimes buy an all white Alaskan Klee Kai for 500.00 to 800.00 as well as a retired breeding dog. Most breeders will ask you to fill out a puppy questionnaire which allows them to get to know you better to find out which one of their puppies best match you and your family. Thanks for asking such a great question.
