Overview

The Afghan Hound has grown in popularity and makes a wonderful companion. Aloof, elegant and devoted, this breed is also very loyal but can be reserved around strangers. Socialization is a must for this breed.

Character

Gay, beautiful and intelligent, this breed is very often seen in the show ring. The Afghan Hound is very dignified but can be disobedient if not trained properly. Given the right home and family, this breed will become the light of your life.

Temperament

A very sweet, loyal and affectionate breed, the Afghan Hound is also very sensitive and should be treated as such. A very noble and courageous breed. They do well with older children and can do exceptionally well with other animals providing they are socialized around them.

Care

The Afghan's coat requires quite a bit of attention. Baths are necessary once a week to keep the coat from matting. Brushing the coat of this breed can make it more easily matted and can cause problems. Special grooming tools are required for this breed.

Coat

The Afghan Hound has a thick and silky coat with a very fine texture to it on the ribs, the legs, and hindquarters. There are many requirements for the coat, one being that it should never be trimmed, and should remain natural. The hair on the ears and feet are feathered.

Training

Being that the Afghan Hound is sensitive, this breed must be trained gently, yet consistently. If not given the proper training and socialization, this breed can become destructive and disobedience. Obedience classes are recommended.

Activity

The Afghan Hound should always have a safe and fenced area to run. This breed should also have regular walks daily. Fresh water should always be available as this breed has a long coat, which can cause him to become hot. Thirty minutes of running per day is recommended.

QUESTION: How do you groom an Afghan Hound?

Anonymous - 4/22/2012 9:50:20 PM

Respond to Question

Afghan hound's fur is perhaps one of the hardest of breeds to groom. bathe the dog when necessary,do not brush in-between baths, brushing an afghan's dry coat will only damage the coat and make it more easily matted. some owners like to use a special air-cushioned brush called a pinbrush. A weekly bath is not as important for an afghan hound that will not be shown, but it saves a lot of time in the end.

QUESTION: I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE afghans. I took 3 breed match quizes, and each one 5 times and all but one of the 1 times(out of one of the 5 tries on one test) gave me the Affy :)YAY! Lucky me! But, papa says they are morons of the dog world :/ I think, and HIGHLY agree that they are just "strong willed" and "independent thinkers". Who is right?: Me or papa? I'd appretiate any help :)

Respond to Question

Afghan's are hard to train, but loyal.

Anonymous - 5/7/2012 7:11:59 PM

Afghans aren't stupid, but I read that they have the lowest intelligence level of the dog world, meaning they can be harder to train and don't figure out problems quite as easily. They are trainable, but not trained easily.

Anonymous - 4/22/2012 9:49:49 PM

afghans are smart, BUT soooooooooooooooooooooooo hard to train!

QUESTION: What is the cost of the Afghan Hound breed?

Respond to Question

QUESTION: Hi! I'm considering adopting an afghan hound/golden retriever that is 2 years old. But, I'm really nervous about adopting him for several reasons. One is that he's located in NJ and I live in NY. Will the car ride be too much for him. I'm also nervous because he was recently surrendered by his old family because one of the kids was allergic to him. Will he fit in with me if I'm not like his old family? I heard that they are fantastic with children. Is this true? Do they have lovable and gentle personalities? It says that he wasn't well socialized and gets nervous easily. Is it possible to socialize him even though he is 2 now? Will he be ok on walks? Are they good with other dogs and are they smart? If I'm able to offer him stability and a loving home will he be ok? Will he make a wonderful addition to my family? Thanks!

Respond to Question

Be VERY careful with dogs offerred for adoption that they really are the mix that they are supposed to be. If you are looking at Petfinder.org look at each dog as he or she IS and not what the shelter says they MIGHT be. Do not avoid this dog because they say he MIGHT have Afghan Hound in him - he probably does not! We cannot tell you what HE will be like, you must go and see him and meet him for yourself - and this goes for any dog you are adopting from a shelter. It is unlikely that they know anything about his background so you will have to judge for yourself. You cannot judge by the fact that any BREED is wonderful with children - you have to meet the dog and learn what you can about his history.

QUESTION: Does an Afgan shed very much?

Anonymous - 7/10/2011 11:09:10 AM

Respond to Question

Afghan hounds shed only their puppy coats. Throughout the remainder of their lifetimes, afghan "hair" will and can die & fall out (as does human hair) during grooming. Afghans have hair, not fur.

Anonymous - 9/22/2011 10:05:02 PM

Afgan's shed only an average amount, like labs and such

Anonymous - 9/16/2011 8:57:30 PM

No, Afgan's do not shed.

QUESTION: Is an Afghan hound bred for a specific purpose?

Anonymous - 4/21/2011 5:03:19 PM

Respond to Question

Afghan Hounds were bred for hunting leopards in the mountains of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. Although leopards were this breed's best known prey, Afghan Hounds were known to take down anything that ran from them. These dogs were basically bred to protect villages and tribes from predators. ~KG

QUESTION: Are Afghan Hounds aggressive?

Anonymous - 12/25/2010 8:31:50 PM

Respond to Question

Afghan Hounds can be. They protect their territory so will bark or growl at someone entering. Some are aggressive with other dogs.

Anonymous - 11/30/2011 6:20:35 PM

Afghan Hounds can be. My dad had one growing up as a kid. His family rescued 2. One was nice the other was vicious to male people. We think that one was abused.

QUESTION: Are afghan hounds hypo-allergenic?

Anonymous - 11/30/2010 12:15:52 PM

Respond to Question

If a dog has fur that means it sheds. If a dog has hair it doesn't shed. Dogs that don't shed are hypoallergenic.

akpowrdgbs - 1/22/2011 3:39:47 PM

I am allergic to most dogs and I do own an Afghan. Even though he has long hair (which sometimes is a pain in the rear to take care of) I don't have any reactions to him. The Afghans have human like hair, which makes a huge difference to allergy prone people. My dog even sleeps next to me in my bed and is extremely cuddly. I couldn't imagine my life without my baby boy. Another plus, if you keep their hair short they don't shed. I think, this breed is great for people that have mild to severe allergies- like me!

Anonymous - 12/10/2010 11:23:55 PM

no afghan hounds have a lot of hair.

QUESTION: can they live with cats and not harm them?

Anonymous - 11/20/2010 1:59:29 AM

Respond to Question

Afghan hounds are hunters at heart, so unless they are raised with the specific cat your talking about. They will chase anything that runs from them.

Anonymous - 5/6/2011 2:59:09 PM

They could but they might chase the cats the cats around and make trouble.
