Overview
Also commonly referred to as the Canary Dog, the Presa Canario's are believed to be descended from the cross breeding of the extinct Bordino Majiro and imported English Mastiffs. This breed was developed in the 1800's specifically for dog fighting. During the 1940's dog fighting was outlawed and the Presa Canario nearly became extinct. This breed was revived during the 1970's by Dr. Carl Semencie, an American veterinarian.
Character
A powerfully constructed breed, the Presa Canario is robust with a large head and chest. They exude an imposing presence and have a severe expression. They are agile, courageous, and unique. The Presa Canario breed has a deep, serious bark, docile with its family, but absolutely fierce and aggressive with strangers.
Temperament
Presa Canario's require a very dominant owner and is not recommended for first time dog owners. The Presa Canario can be highly dangerous if placed with the wrong owner. However, with the right owner this breed is capable of being a loyal and devoted companion. They make excellent guard dogs as they are protective by nature of their family and territory and will not hesitate to attack anyone or anything it perceives as a threat. This breed is not suitable for homes with children or other pets.
Care
Presa Canario's regular brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. Health problems associated with this breed are hip dysplasia, demodex mange, a diminished immune system, and eyelid problems.
Coat
The Presa Canario has a short, flat, smooth single coat. The coat is coarse in texture, very fine, short on the ears, and slightly longer in length on the rear hindquarters and withers. This breed is an average shedder.
Training
Intense early socialization and obedience training is an absolute must. Presa Canario owners must be fair, consistent, assertive, and set firm limitations. Mutual respect is crucial.
Activity
The Presa Canario breed is not recommended for apartment dwelling. They do best with a securely fenced yard or rural home. They are very athletic and enjoy daily exercise. The Presa must be securely leashed and muzzled when in public.
Ownership
Help reduce the number of Presa Canario puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required.

What is an average price range for well pedigreed Presa Canario puppy or trained adult dog with same pedigree?

Anonymous

The average price is between $1500.00 - $2000.00 per puppy. As for an already trained adult dog, it would depend on as what training you are hoping for, but I'm sure it would be over $2000.00.

what's a good exercise and way to keep her from snapping back at our older dogs dominate nature? Though you see so much about Presa Canario's not being suitable for a house hold of children I have 4 from 9 months to 5 years.. my children's absolute best friend but she also shares our house hold with our five year old blue Pitt.. "both females" in the house there fine but let outside its a fight so my press rodent get much exercise because she won't move off our steps as she's almost completely attached to our Pitt who hates her .. therefore she gets very antsy in the house to play as she can no longer do it outside because our other dog will pick a fight.. it only happened once but our Pitt stood no chance n is to dumb to give up her dominance n it became ww3 in my home so I muzzled both for almost three months.. never again have had an issue but I also keep them separate outside ..

Presa Canario's are GREAT family dogs! They are great with children, very patient, laid back, and gentle. They are extremely loyal, and protective of their homes and families. However, in order for them to be great family pets, they MUST be socialized while they are young. They need to be around as many different dogs, people, and situations as possible. However, they will always be dominant with other dogs, so owning another dominant dog of the same sex is probably not a good idea. As long as they get PLENTY of socialization, i would recommend them to anyone!

Though u may read that there not good around children or pets my girl is around 4 children from 9 months to 5 years and is there besfriend.. is say the only downfall someone might have is there size when hyper she can be a handful.. but I no longer worry about the Darth of my home as she's the best on guard protector I've ever had.. I live in a area that friend apon "aggressive breeds" yet I own two n freely take them everywhere with me so in the wrong neighborhoods u may have it handsfull but there definitely worth the fight.she also shares our home with our five year old blue Pitt! I will not lie we had one very bad fight not started by my presa but my Pitt stood no chance to my press defending herself.. therefor if u have another animal id strongly suggest u get of opposite sex as there size n power is nothing to joke with..

In the right family, if properly introduced, and with proper leadership, kids within the family will be just fine with a Presa Canario. this is not a dog for first time dog owners and can even be dangerous with the wrong kind of owner. The kids MUST be in higher authority than the dog to be safe.

I wouldn't worry as my girl was very quiet as a pup too but now at two years she's the most vocal thing on this earth "a bad thing" if u ask me.. a presa is a huge liability mine is a protector of me n my children by every means which scares me!! there size n power is never matched as I first had issues with her n my 90lbs Pitt "my Pitt stood no chance at the same weight".. your pup being friendly is what you want as they get older they seem to get less friendly with guest as there guard dogs by nature if I was u id have her around as meny ppl as possible because the flaw in my dog is that she's never friendly with outsiders and it sometimes worrys me she may bite someone one day believing she's protecting my family

Presa Canario's are a very dominating breed. He/she is trying to display thier dominance over you. You need to establish you are the alpha dog and you are the dominate one immediatley ! This breed requiers very firm and assertive owners. I did this with mine and he is very obedient.

Yes presa canario's make excellent guard dogs !!! They can decide if a person is a threat or not and treat them accordingly. Unlike breeds like the german shepherd and doberman whom are typically aggressive towards all strangers. They are generally great with everyone once they get to know them and establish if they are a threat or not. My presa is a big ham and loves most people, but I have a sister in law who is kind of a shady person and he hates her. Wont let her anywhere near the house.

My presa girl is just under two years.. not only does her size and stance keep most awake she's a natural guardian!! I also have four child a nine month old 3year old twins and a 5 year old & she's there best friend .. there actually very calm and loving unless someone's trying to play "they love to play" with visitors I normally separate my dog from them as she's never bit but she keeps them away from my kids by pushing them back with the side of her body n blocking them off!.. I don't have much family where I live so its mostly my fault as I didn't socialize her as a pup as much as I should.

Presas are good living with dogs of the opposite sex. If you have two males or two females they will fight a lot. I have a male presa and german shepheard and they get into viciouse fights all the time. But whenever a female dog comes over he is very friendly....I also take him to the dog park and he loves playing with the other dogs.... only time there is ever a problem is if another dominate alpha personality male shows up.

how long does it take for cropped ears to heal on a presa?

Anonymous

We got our Presas ears cropped at 7 weeks. The shorter the crop the faster they heal. Our puppy has the smallest ears the vet will do and roughly took 6-8 weeks to fully heal with posts and stiches removed. Be aware it is alot of work and they HAVE to be cared for properly... From experience Polysporin Original Ointment ( not cream) is by far the best and this must be done 4-6 times a day, to keep the scabs moist. Dry scabs will ruin the crop and cause ears to wrinkle and not stand up straight due to scar tissue build up. Puppy must besupervised at all times, Do Not Use Cones!!

I FEED MY 2 YR OLD PRESA AN ALL NATURAL DOG FOOD. I ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE FIRST INGREDIENT IS FISH AS I FOUND THAT HIS SKIN WAS ALWAYS DRY WHEN I FIRST GOT HIM. NOW HIS SKIN IS GREAT. I ALSO KEEP HIM AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT WITH THIS TYPE OF FOOD. I DO NOT FEED HIM A HIGH PROTIEN DIET AS I FOUND THAT HIS WEIGHT WOULD DRAMATICALLY INCREASE AND WE COULDN'T MANAGE HIM. HE CURRENTLY WEIGHS 90LBS AND IS HEALTHY AS CAN BE. WITH LOTS OF ENERGY. I ALSO HAVE FOUND THAT HE IS NOT HUNGRY ALL THE TIME WHILE ON THIS DIET AS WELL. WHEN I HAD HIM ON THE HIGH PROTIEN DIET HE WOULD EAT AND POOP AND THATS IT.

is a presa canario hard to train in comparison to other breeds

Anonymous

Thats a good question. That all depends on what you are training your presa canario dog to do. For obedience training no. Just like any breed presa canario's posses the strong urge to please their master. If you want the dog to be "less aggressive" it is printed in their dna. Some people will say its all in the way you raise the dog but those are the people that really dont know the breed. My last presa was a 140lbs male and he seemed to love everyone until one day my 8 month old niece was crawling by him , she is now missing her left arm the attack was completely unprovoked. Dont get me wrong i love the breed and im still very passionate about them but i just cannot bring myself to have another and risk the accident and possibly losing both a child and another dog.
8/3/2011 10:11:19 AM

If you are a very firm and very dominate type owner presa canario's are not hard to train. They require a firm hand because they are very dominate dogs but also love to please you. My presa cant stand for me to be mad at him. So he was pretty simple to train, not as easy as a german shepheard but not hard either. Treats are a great way to start training them and slowly moving off to just verbal.

Yes but that is where it is your responsibility to stimulate your dog's mind. Laziness in a presa canario comes from laziness in the training, consistency, consistency, consistency, a heavy hand is also needed, also alot of affection will have you presa begging to work for you.

Both dogs will do fine together but they have to be the opposite sex, one male one female. Or else you will have problems. As for a Presa being around children. I have Four kids, ages 4,6,8 and 10 They have been raised with her, she is 8. there was never one time that she was rough with the kids. She is the best dog ever and we are getting another one.

My Pitt stood no chance but also instigated it and attacked first because she wants dominance she still snaps here n there but as of right now there doing great luckily "after four months of muzzling"my press don't seem to care about our Pitts attitude... get opposite sex positively because having two large dogs fighting gets very bad in seconds..
