Overview
Also commonly referred to as the Canary Dog, the Presa Canario's are believed to be descended from the cross breeding of the extinct Bordino Majiro and imported English Mastiffs. This breed was developed in the 1800's specifically for dog fighting. During the 1940's dog fighting was outlawed and the Presa Canario nearly became extinct. This breed was revived during the 1970's by Dr. Carl Semencie, an American veterinarian.
Character
A powerfully constructed breed, the Presa Canario is robust with a large head and chest. They exude an imposing presence and have a severe expression. They are agile, courageous, and unique. The Presa Canario breed has a deep, serious bark, docile with its family, but absolutely fierce and aggressive with strangers.
Temperament
Presa Canario's require a very dominant owner and is not recommended for first time dog owners. The Presa Canario can be highly dangerous if placed with the wrong owner. However, with the right owner this breed is capable of being a loyal and devoted companion. They make excellent guard dogs as they are protective by nature of their family and territory and will not hesitate to attack anyone or anything it perceives as a threat. This breed is not suitable for homes with children or other pets.
Care
Presa Canario's regular brushing of the coat with a firm bristle brush will minimize loose and dead hair. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. Health problems associated with this breed are hip dysplasia, demodex mange, a diminished immune system, and eyelid problems.
Coat
The Presa Canario has a short, flat, smooth single coat. The coat is coarse in texture, very fine, short on the ears, and slightly longer in length on the rear hindquarters and withers. This breed is an average shedder.
Training
Intense early socialization and obedience training is an absolute must. Presa Canario owners must be fair, consistent, assertive, and set firm limitations. Mutual respect is crucial.
Activity
The Presa Canario breed is not recommended for apartment dwelling. They do best with a securely fenced yard or rural home. They are very athletic and enjoy daily exercise. The Presa must be securely leashed and muzzled when in public.
Ownership
Help reduce the number of Presa Canario puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required.

what's a good exercise and way to keep her from snapping back at our older dogs dominate nature? Though you see so much about Presa Canario's not being suitable for a house hold of children I have 4 from 9 months to 5 years.. my children's absolute best friend but she also shares our house hold with our five year old blue Pitt.. "both females" in the house there fine but let outside its a fight so my press rodent get much exercise because she won't move off our steps as she's almost completely attached to our Pitt who hates her .. therefore she gets very antsy in the house to play as she can no longer do it outside because our other dog will pick a fight.. it only happened once but our Pitt stood no chance n is to dumb to give up her dominance n it became ww3 in my home so I muzzled both for almost three months.. never again have had an issue but I also keep them separate outside ..

Presa Canario's are GREAT family dogs! They are great with children, very patient, laid back, and gentle. They are extremely loyal, and protective of their homes and families. However, in order for them to be great family pets, they MUST be socialized while they are young. They need to be around as many different dogs, people, and situations as possible. However, they will always be dominant with other dogs, so owning another dominant dog of the same sex is probably not a good idea. As long as they get PLENTY of socialization, i would recommend them to anyone!

Though u may read that there not good around children or pets my girl is around 4 children from 9 months to 5 years and is there besfriend.. is say the only downfall someone might have is there size when hyper she can be a handful.. but I no longer worry about the Darth of my home as she's the best on guard protector I've ever had.. I live in a area that friend apon "aggressive breeds" yet I own two n freely take them everywhere with me so in the wrong neighborhoods u may have it handsfull but there definitely worth the fight.she also shares our home with our five year old blue Pitt! I will not lie we had one very bad fight not started by my presa but my Pitt stood no chance to my press defending herself.. therefor if u have another animal id strongly suggest u get of opposite sex as there size n power is nothing to joke with..
