Overview
Considered to be one of the oldest terriers, this breed originated in 18th century England as a foxhunter and ratter. Though not as popular as other terrier breeds, they are well known and established. Today the Smooth Fox Terrier is primarily a family companion and show dog.
Character
The Smooth Fox Terrier is a well-proportioned, active, cheerful, and independent breed. They are elegant, eager, compact, and extremely courageous. This is a bold and daring breed that is not easily intimidated and possesses both beauty and brains.
Temperament
A loyal and deeply devoted breed, the Smooth Fox Terrier is also loving and affectionate. They thrive on companionship and attention and do not do well if ignored or are left alone for extended periods of time. This breed does best in a home with older considerate children. Regarded as one of the most aggressive breeds they are not suited for homes with other pets. They are wary of strangers and make excellent watchdogs. Smooth Fox Terriers are not recommended for the novice, apathetic, or sedentary owner.
Care
The Smooth Fox Terrier needs occasional brushing with a firm bristle brush and professional stripping of the coat twice a year. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. This breed is prone to such health issues as deafness, postnasal drip, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, lens luxation, and distichiasis.
Coat
The coat of the Smooth Fox Terrier is dense, short, flat, and smooth. It is also quite abundant and covers not only the entire body, but the stomach and underside of the thighs as well. The color of the coat is predominately white with black or brown markings. This breed is an average shedder.
Training
This breed requires early intensive and extensive socialization and obedience training. The Smooth Fox Terrier is willful, will challenge authority, and attempt to be dominant. They are prone to excessive barking. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods but must have an experienced owner and handler. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, consistency, and patience. The Smooth Fox Terrier displays talent in agility, fly ball, tracking, and hunting.
Activity
Boisterous and playful, the Smooth Fox Terrier requires daily physical exercise and mental stimulation. They benefit from and enjoy securely leashed walks, family play sessions such as ball and Frisbee, and a safely fenced area to freely romp and run in. Smooth Fox Terriers will become destructive and bark incessantly if bored or lonely. They will do okay in an apartment provided they are given sufficient exercise, attention, and stimulation.
Ownership
Help reduce the number of Smooth Fox Terrier puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required.

What are the first year vet costs for a female toy fox terrier?

The vet costs all depend on the dog and your vet. Some vets cost more then other's and some dogs are more expensive then other's. Although, the average I would say, including spay would be between $500.00 - $700.00. But again, it all depends on the dog and the vet.

Yes they can travel well in a car but not so much by air. Most airlines chrg about 125 for small pets but again, think twice about flying. As to leaving them in a kennel for more than a week at the outside is a big no-no for this breed! How about a loving neighbor?

I have owned a smooth foxy. She lived a long and happy 15 years. She was always happy to be put into kennels when we were going away and couldn't have her join us. She was also a great house guest when needing to stay at friends homes, great with small children and happy with a ball. I would happily recommend a smooth to anyone who is after a fun, funny and clever dog - just be sure to walk them and play with them ;)

the smooth fox is not usually a very friendly dog with strangers but in your case it might be very comfortable with other friendly dogs

A smooth fox terrier is a fun dog. I would recommend that when considering this breed you keep in mind: fencing - they can dig under fences and jump over fences so make sure your yard is secure. Their not good off the lead until their old and slow - they are a hunting dog after all and love a great chase of a mouse or cat and their fast when their on a 'mission'. If you want a dog that you don't need to have on a lead all the time this breed is not for you - but don't let that change you're mind - their still fun and easy to care for.

Does an electric fence work as a good fece for a smooth fox terrier???????????

Excellent! My fox terrier makes me carry her over the line if we are going for a walk off leash. We will get out of the habit of putting on the collar but after a couple of weeks, she will forget when other dogs come over to play.

with plenty of toys and a secure yard where they can't dig under the fence or jump over it. be sure to walk and play with it before you go to work and when you return home.
