Overview
A powerful and courageous breed, the Fila Brasileiro is a loyal and dedicated companion animal. The Fila Brasileiro has strong protective instincts of his owner and territory, but very loving. This breed should be kept on a lead at all times as they are very protective and can become aggressive given the situation.
Character
Socialized from puppyhood, the "Fila" does well with children providing they do not overly pester. Confident, self-assured, and a calm disposition make the Fila Brasileiro ideal for someone looking for a protective yet docile pet. Commonly used as a guard dog.
Temperament
The Fila Brasileiro is not for everyone. This breed is very powerful and can prove to be quite a handful for the average pet owner. Proper breeding is a must to create a mild-tempered dog. The Fila Brasileiro can become aggressive if he feels threatened.
Care
Brushing with a firm bristle brush will be sufficient for this shorthaired breed. Average shedding, a wipe down with a damp washcloth should remove any loose hair. Bathe only when necessary. The Fila Brasileiro should be protected from cold weather considering the very short, smooth coat.
Coat
This large breed has a very short coat and little to no maintenance is sufficient. The Fila Brasileiros coat should be smooth, soft and dense, being somewhat weather resistant.
Training
This powerful dog is not recommended for a first time trainer. Obedience classes are recommended, and required at times. The Fila Brasileiro can be difficult to control. Dominant owner required if dog is to be well mannered and obedient.
Activity
A fenced in large yard is required for this large and lively breed. Recommended for country living, the Fila Brasileiro can also do well in home life if given sufficient exercise. Requires regular walks and free roaming exercise.
Ownership
Help reduce the number of Fila Brasileiro puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required.

Do Filas' do well in a home with other (smaller) breed dogs? Do Filaas do well in homes with other (Small) breed dogs?

No, the Fila Brasileiro is a hunting and protection breed of dog that has a high prey drive. They will look at anything smaller then the as prey and can easily hunt it down and injure the small animal.

what kind of health issues affect the fila?

Prone to most large-breed ailments. Beware of hip dysplasia. As these dogs are prone to bloat, feed two or three small meals a day, instead of one large one. Also prone to CHD, gastric torsion, elbow dysplasia and PRA.

when will a fila be aggressive

My experience with 3 filas at the same time was, they are naturally aloof with strangers, even as small puppies ( 10 weeks). As they get older they continued this trait and often seemed that they were unaware of what was going on in the room."DO NOT BE FOOLED"!They are very aware and although mine were never aggressive, they were very protective!!! Sudden moves by visitors cause them to come to attention, if someone stands and approaches you while you are still sitting they will stand & begin to approach if you don't command them not to. Mine never advanced on anyone in the house just because they didn't know them. They were not aggressive, but very conscious of the fact that their job was to protect! They were the same way with children, very protective.

My Fila has her own bed where she lays when in the house. If anyone comes to visit, whether friend or stranger, she suddenly becomes my third leg and lays down by my feet and stays there until the company leaves or is put outside.

Does a Fila drool overly much?

My Fila only drools when she just finishes drinking from her bowl. It's like she forgot to swallow. Other wise she doesn't drool at all. Not even when she is begging at the table.

I had 3 Fila's at once. They did not stand and drool, but, when the shook their heads the pool in their jaws would sling on the walls. I would take a towel and wipe out their jaws a couple of times a day. I also wiped the walls once a week.
