Ownership
Help reduce the number of Wire Dachshund puppies in shelters by doing your due diligence. Many puppies are often purchased with little or no knowledge of what goes into parenting one. Uneducated decisions often leave the puppy in need of adoption and in the care of rescue groups. Bringing home a puppy into your family has many benefits but we first implore you to educate yourself. An informed decision will take into account the characteristics of the breed, your lifestyle, expected veterinary care, the demands and limitations of owning one, their activity requirements and levels of companionship required.

Angie is 1-1/2 years old. Only problem we are having is in training her to poop outside. She walks several times daily and never does a thing. Once in the house she goes. We've tried peewee pads but all she does is use them to sleep. Any suggestions re training are welcome.

If possible try an ex-pen. I have 2 females that won't poop on a leash. They will in an ex-pen.

Wire haired dachshunds are an AKC recognized bread as well as a UKC recognized breed. I am in an AKC show this weekend with my male and female in Lockport, NY. I will be showing them at a UCK show in Lock NY on 11/2,3&4. I have 4 adult ACK & UKC Champions.

I have a Dachshund, will be 16 years old soon. What is their life span?

Normally the oldest is about 18 years but it depends on how active your Dachshund is.

I breed standard Wires and they usually live to 16-18 years but my sister, who is also a Dachshund Breeder, has had 2 live to 21 years old.

Do wire haired dachshunds shed?

My wire haired dachshund doesn't seem to shed at all and its 95 degrees outside.

Wire haired dachshunds do shed but not much. Wires have a soft undercoat which needs to be pulled out leaving the harsh coat.

I would like to know how to groom a double coated wire haired double coated dachshund

Wires are stripped. You use either stripping stones or stripping knifes. The under coat is a soft dead coat which needs to be pulled out. This is how you groom for showing. They can also be clipped like most pet Terriers are. They too need to be stripped shows.

I am just writing a brief comment really about this gorgeous breed as there is no info on your website. I have a wire haired dachshund and he is now 13 years old. They are an adorable breed, can be stubborn to train but great once they are. They are very loyal and loves cuddles. Gets on well with other dogs but makes sure they all know he's the boss!! Gets hand stripped clipping about 3-4 months as does not cast hair, and be careful of their backs because of their shape to avoid jumping off and on things too high. Hope this helps a little for people until you find info for your page.

I would like to add to the above that they make very good guard dogs. They may be small but have a very loud low bark and from the outside that could sound like a big dog. All around a great pet and companion.

this is really helpful info, thanks! I see that they don't shed, which is great- does that mean that they are also good for allergy sufferers?
